newsdesk.se /// It's been close to 20 years that African Contemporary art has emerged on the stage of the international art scene. Magazines such as Revue Noire in Paris and NKA in New York have steadily delivered the accompanying discursive rationales to sustain an art practice that does no more speak for itself. Events such as the short lived Dakar Biennale and the short lived Johannesburg Biennale participated to the construction of an institutional framework within which art professionals engage with contemporary productions by artists from Africa. Recent showcases of African artists at the several editions of the Venice Biennale and Documenta indicate the growing trend that black is back to be beautiful again.

Koyo Kouoh is a curator and cultural manager. She is the founder and artistic director of RAW MATERIAL COMPANY, a site for art practice and critical exchange. She has collaborated with the Dakar Biennale of Art from 2000-2004. Specializing in photography and public interventions, she has curated exhibitions in Brazil, Switzerland, Austria, Germany and the United States and written on contemporary African art.
She recently served as advisor to the artistic director for Documenta 12. Her next exhibition "Hypocracy: the site specificity of morality" co-curated with Stina Hoegkvist will open at the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design in February 09 in Oslo. She is based in Dakar.
